Sailor Starlights and Princess Kakyuu
The Sailor Starlights and Princess Kakyuu all came from the planet of Kinmoku, a planet far outside of the Solar System we know. Princess Kakyuu (or also known as the Fireball Princess) is the ruling princess of Kinmoku, with the Sailor Starlights as her guardians, just as the Sailor Senshis of the Solar System are the guardians of Sailor Moon. When Kinmoku was destroyed by Sailor Galaxia, she fled to Earth to find the Light of Hope that might save the galaxy. The Sailor Starlights followed her to Earth, and there, they met up with Usagi and the other Sailor Senshis, thus starting the fifth and final story arc of Sailor Moon.
Princess Kakyuu
Princess Kakyuu (commonly subtitled as Fireball Princess) is the princess of Kinmoku, a fictional planet outside of the solar system. She is said to smell like the flowers of the sweet osmanthus, which are a recurring motif in her character design. The name of her planet is a pun on the name of these fragrant blossoms, which are called kinmokusei in Japanese—the suffix sei, when added to Kinmoku, means "planet" or "star." When Kakyuu first introduces herself, she calls her specific kingdom Tankei, a homonym of another word which also means the Sweet Osmanthus shrub. Kinmoku is also the home of the Sailor Starlights, who are Kakyuu's protectors and spend much of the story searching for her. The details of their collective story vary between the manga and the anime.
In the manga, Kinmoku is attacked and destroyed by Sailor Galaxia, leaving almost no survivors. Kakyuu herself travels to Earth and hides within a censer protected by a small child, ChibiChibi. Having lost contact with her, the Sailor Starlights follow behind, searching desperately. Kakyuu is injured in the battle with Galaxia, and cannot reveal herself until her wounds are healed. She travels to Earth because she senses the birth of the Silver Moon Crystal (which is an evolution of the original Silver Crystal). She is shown to have her own Senshi form, called Sailor Kakyuu, and reveals to Sailor Moon that her own lover had died in the war against Sailor Galaxia. Her uniform appears as a cross between her normal dress and the outfits worn by the Starlights, making it unique among all the Senshi. She eventually accompanies Sailor Moon to Zero Star Sagittarius to confront Galaxia, but is brutally killed by Sailor Chi. She dies in Sailor Moon's arms, saying that she wants to be reborn, maybe in a world without war, but at the very least to be with everyone again. Her body is then destroyed and her Sailor Crystal taken by a reanimated Sailor Venus, who has been revived along with the rest of the Sailor Team to serve Galaxia. She uses 2 attacks when in her senshi form, Starlights Royal Flush and Kinmoku Fusion Tempest.
In the anime, no mention of battle-wounds is made, and her purpose in going to Earth is to find the "Light of Hope" and hide from Galaxia. During her time under Chibichibi's care, she is aware of the Sailor Starlights searching for her, but cannot reveal herself too soon. She finally emerges to save Sailor Moon and the others from a black hole and resumes leadership of the Starlights. The Starlights imply many times that, like Sailor Moon, Kakyuu has the power to restore a Phage to its original form. They claim that they have to kill them as that is all they can do with without her. This power is never shown. Not long after Kakyuu is found, Galaxia appears in battle and personally takes Princess Kakyuu's star seed. Unlike the manga, Kakyuu never transforms into a Senshi form, although she is shown to have a "true star seed." Kakyuu sets up a forcefield that is able to block Galaxia's attacks for a short time, but it does not save her. Before dying, Kakyuu sees in a vision that ChibiChibi herself is the Light of Hope. After Sailor Moon defeats Chaos, Princess Kakyuu is revived. She and her Starlights return to their home to rebuild and start over.

Sailor Starlights
The Sailor Starlights are a team of three Sailor Senshi: Sailor Star Fighter, Sailor Star Maker, and Sailor Star Healer. They come from Kinmoku, a fictional planet outside of the solar system, after it has been wiped out in an attack by Sailor Galaxia. On Earth, they take on the guise of a male pop badn, the Three Lights, and use their music as a signal beacon for their leader, Princess Kakyuu. In this form they take on the names Kou Seiya, Kou Taiki, and Kou Yaten. In the manga, they are always female and merely dress as males; in the anime, they physically transform into young women and are much more major characters. In both cases, Seiya develops romantic feelings for Usagi.
Sailor Star Fighter/Seiya
Seiya Kou, as Sailor Star Fighter, is the leader of the Sailor Starlights and the lead vocals for the Three Lights. In general, Seiya acts arrogant and tends to be, at least on the surface, confident in his/her own abilities. From their first meeting on, Seiya likes calls Usagi odango, like Mamoru does. Seiya's responsibilities in the band are lead vocals, keyboards, lyrics, and composition. S/he was seen in the anime playing the drums very angrily in their hideout because they think their princess has not heard them yet. After this, Seiya is not seen on the drums again. He/she also enjoys American football and is on the school team for it.
In the manga, Seiya becomes the star player of the local high school American football team, and becomes the school's star athlete, upsetting Haruka Tenoh, as she was the previous star athlete of the school (on the track & field team, however). Eventually, she raises the suspicions of the Sailor Soldiers as to her identity. She also develops deep feelings for Usagi, kissing her and thinking as she walks away, "We are of different stations in the universe. It might be unrequited love."
In the anime, Taiki and Yaten consider him prone to bouts of childishness (such as when he shows off his basketball skills in front of the school), but generally follow his lead. He hates losing, giving up, or being told he's not good enough. He also behaves arrogantly, saying once, "Usually girls are happy when they see me." "Why?" Usagi asks. "Because I'm cool," he says. Like in the manga, Seiya develops romantic feelings for Usagi, though it is implied Seiya's romantic feelings for Usagi may be a confusion with similar feelings for Kakyuu—when he daydreams of his home planet, he thinks lovingly of an image of his princess, which is suddenly superimposed by an image of Usagi (much as Usagi had seen Seiya's image overlaid by Mamoru in previous episodes). The two even go on a date at an amusement park in the anime, which prematurely ends when Sailor Iron Mouse attacks. Seiya makes his interest in her clear when they spend time together practicing softball, telling her, "I like your light." However, Seiya's feelings are not fully reciprocated and acknowledges the one-sided romance, finally kissing her cheek and saying "I wish I had met you sooner." After Galaxia's defeat, before leaving earth, Seiya tells Usagi he will never forget her while Usagi, oblivious to what he really meant, tells him that they will always be friends.
Sailor Star Fighter's powers were not really that much known. She/he can travel at light speed since he is a shooting star, but can also use the attack "Star Serious Laser". A description of Sailor Star Fighter's name was a symbolism of the destruction of stars, though she/he never destroyed any stars.

Sailor Star Maker/Taiki
Taiki Kou is the most intellectual of the Starlights. His/Her abilities rival that of Ami Mizuno, though s/he considers her romantic notions foolish. Taiki's responsibilities in the band are background vocals, keyboards, lyrics, and guitar. S/he also enjoys peotry and belongs to the Literary club at school. Taiki is meant to be more distant than Setsuna Meioh.
In both the anime and the manga, Taiki's role is almost the same except for some events that happened in the anime that didn't happen in the manga. In the anime Ami's appeal for him to see the good in dreaming does begin to have an effect, however. In combat with a phage, Star Maker is the first of the Starlights to willingly allow Sailor Moon to heal the monster rather than trying to kill it herself. She spares the monster only because it had been a teacher who Ami respected. Later in the series, as he is beginning to lose hope in finding Princess Kakyuu, he visits a sick girl named Misa in the hospital. She shows him a drawing of the Princess that she sees when she listens to the Three Lights' song. With renewed hope, Taiki returns to the Three Lights. In the anime, he sometimes wears glasses. Like Yaten, Taiki believes that Seiya should stay away from Usagi after learning she is Sailor Moon, despite their wish, shared by Princess Kakyuu and the Guardian Senshi, for them all to work together. However, his views on Usagi change for the better near the end of Sailor Stars. He seems to be the most cool headed of the trio.
Sailor Star Maker's powers were not really known that much. As Seiya and Yaten, she can travel at light speed since she was a shooting star. She can also use the attack of "Star Gentle Uterus". A description of her name, Sailor Star Maker, was that it represented the birth of new stars, though it was never an attack, or an ability of Sailor Star Maker.

Sailor Star Healer/Yaten
Yaten Kou is often distant and cynical about everything. Yaten does not like to socialize or do sports. His/her remarks are often sharp-edged and blunt, which further separates him/her from the world. At one point, the other Starlights even chastise Yaten for behaving in a way that might reduce the number of fans. However, he and Luna get along well. At one point during episode 178, Luna inspires Yaten to keep on fighting. In the course of the season Yaten bonds with Minako Aino who takes a liking to him. Their intricate relationship becomes evident in episode 192 where Minako enters an idol audition and Yaten is one of the jurors.
Yaten's responsibilities in the band are background vocals, keyboards, bass guitar, and song arrangement. S/he also enjoys photography, but doesn't belong to any school club, preferring to just go home.
In the manga, Yaten is a female that dresses up as a male. Blunt, and to the point, for example antagonizing Michiru Kaioh for her choice of lipstick. Yaten doesn't interact with the people around her much. She wants to focus on the mission most of all. She is egotistical and nurses grudges, and she hates injury.
In the anime, he has the most spiritual awareness of the Starlights, and is able to tell when Starseeds are taken by Sailor Galaxia. He views humans as untrustworthy and wants to find Princess Kakyuu so they can leave Earth as quickly as possible. This comes further to light when they discover that Usagi is Sailor Moon. Yaten believes that Seiya should stay away from Usagi, despite their wish, shared by Princess Kakyuu and the Guardian Senshi, for them all to work together. His view is shared by Taiki as well as Sailors Uranus, Neptune and Pluto. However, also like Taiki, his views on Usagi change for the better near the end of Sailor Stars. In Yaten's civilian form in the anime, "he" is shown to be physically stronger than Makoto Kino, the strongest of the Guardian Senshi, in her civilian form.
Sailor Star Healer's powers, like Seiya and Taiki, were also not that known. She can travel at light speed, being that she is a shooting star. An attack power of hers is "Star Sensitive Inferno". A description of her name, Sailor Star Healer, was that she represented the guardians of existing stars, hovering between life and death. But there was no power, or attack that she ever uses related to that symbolism in either the anime or the manga.
